Coverage that is relevant and true to your needs

When considering insurance options, we ensure the highest level of coverage options together with access to invaluable advice and security consultants that remains relevant and true to your needs.

Important considerations include:

Kidnap and Ransom Cover

Coverage whether a person is actually abducted or a ransom was paid in the belief that a person had been taken. In addition to covering the cost of the ransom payment, some insurers also cover the interest costs for a loan taken to pay the ransom or extortion payment.

Extortion Cover

In an extortion scenario the perpetrators demand ransom payment as a condition of not carrying out the threat. Extortion coverage responds to illegal threats to kill, injure, abduct your people, to damage property or disseminate trade secrets or confidential information.

Hijack

A hijack, like a detention, is triggered when people are held against their will or ‘under duress’ while travelling. Example scenarios include plane hijackings, protracted carjackings and water vessel seizures.

Disappearance

When someone is missing without an explanation it can be a confusing and alarming situation. Disappearance covers investigation costs following the disappearance of an insured person who has been missing for more than 48 hours, whatever the reason.

Lost Ransom Cover

Covering money or other conveyed property used to pay a ransom or extortion demand.

Express Kidnap

An emerging crime trend is shorter term abductions with the intention of rapid financial gain (such as repeatedly forced withdrawals from an ATM). These fast-paced abductions, often concluding in a matter of hours when maximum withdrawal limits have been reached, have been termed ‘Express Kidnapping’.

Expenses

The aim at all times is the safe return of a kidnap victim, coverage extensions should be incorporated for expenses and legal costs incurred to achieve the release of a hostage. These may include independent negotiators’ fees, interest on loans taken out for a ransom payment, salary continuation, consequential personal financial loss and reasonable medical expenses.

Security Consultants

Specialist insurers can provide security consultants from selected security firms, to assist in negotiating a victims safe return. While it isn’t mandatory to use a specific firm with most insurers, early involvement of an experienced security consultant can often mean the quick return of a victim at a reasonable cost.

Security Evacuation

Covers the emergency extraction of expatriates or internationally based family members from any location around the world, should the security environment significantly deteriorate.

These days, many travel, home or personal liability policies offer a Kidnap & Ransom (K&R) limit as part of their cover. It isn’t unusual to see limits of $250,000 or $500,000 automatically included, leading many believe they are adequately covered for a kidnap event.

Whilst it might seem comforting on paper, in reality you could find yourself grossly uninsured, having to pay for additional expenses you hadn’t envisaged.

It is therefore always best to seek advice from HDL regarding cover options and solutions where we can help make sure you are protected.

Case study

The daughter of an executive living abroad was abducted from her home. The father was contacted by the kidnappers, who demanded $500,000 for her return. Fearing for his daughter’s safety, the father paid the ransom and she was released unharmed. When the executive’s company was informed of the incident, it called in its security consultant. The security consultant verified the incident and, in the process, concluded the family’s maid had been involved.
